In our song, we sing the teaching of suchness, intimate entrustment, Buddha ancestors. Now we have it. Let us protect and care for it. to care for concentratedly, to care for this intimacy in an undistracted, relaxed, open and attentive mode of presence is called the precious mirror samadhi.

To care for this Intimate, inconceivable, mutual transmission is also called the self-receiving and employing samadhi. part of taking care of this intimate is cleaning the temple of consciousness. And then we are able, undistractedly, to offer every action of body, speech and mind to the enactment of the care of this transmission.

When I observe you and listen to you, I imagine that you are diligently caring for and compassionately cleaning all the activities of consciousness, that you are cleaning all the things that are arising in the turbulence of consciousness with eyes of compassion. And when we have practiced in a compassionate way, we may be ready.

And I dream that we are expressing in all our actions this precious mirror samadhi, that we are expressing this intimate transmission. Someone asked me, I heard the sound of the great horned owl this morning. I said, I did not hear the sound of the great horned owl this morning.

And then he said, I heard it. I was worried I hadn't heard the sound of the owl for a long time. So I'm so grateful to hear the sound of the owl. So wonderful. And also, early in the morning, we can hear the sound of the surf. And then she said, as wonderful as these sounds are, they're temporary and fleeting. Can we listen to these sounds wholeheartedly

not holding on to them, being kind to any impulse to cling to the sounds, let them happen again and again. And in that listening, we may hear the Dharma. And I said, we may be able to hear the sound of the rain today, starting around 10 o'clock. How lovely, how wonderfully lovely in its fleeting gift to us.

Thank you for cleaning the so that you can listen to the sounds of the rain and the sounds of all beings. And then two stories popped up in consciousness. Once upon a time the founder of this temple said, sometimes when I'm sitting I feel like I can sit I don't remember if he said, but, or and, or when.

But, and, when the bell rings for walking meditation, I get up and do walking meditation. The second story was told in this room a few days ago. A Zen monk who was visiting here and was sitting in the third seat, seat one, seat two, seat, no, seat one, well actually, seat, abbot seat, seat one, He was sitting in that seat and to his right was Kai and to his left was Palmer.

Is that Palmer back there? He said that he really appreciated practicing with us this fall. He had to go back to Japan. But he was very moved to practice with us. And he said, one day, when I was sitting, something amazing happened while I was sitting. period of sitting upright. And he said, at least he was translated as saying, I felt like I could sit forever. And then he said something like,

But still, as wonderful as this sitting might be, it's temporary." And then he said something else. I don't know if he said, that's not temporary, but there's something else besides the temporary bliss. that sometimes comes into our life when we're sitting the sound of the owl. And what is that? That is Kai sitting to my right and Palmer sitting to my left. Kai is temporary Also, Palmer is temporary.

We're all temporary. But the intimate transmission, the way we're supporting each other to practice the Buddha way, that is always the case. No matter what happens, we are supporting each other to practice the Buddha way. even though Palmer's back now and having problems with his ankle. He's still sitting with all of us, supporting us, and we support him. This is the intimate, inconceivable, indestructible teaching of suchness which has been and always is transmitted to us. I dream that we can remember this moment by moment.

So the statement of faith is that when we are the expression of this Buddha mind seal, when we become, moment by moment, the expression of this intimate, inconceivable mutual support. In all our actions we express this by sitting upright in the awareness of this Dharma. But also by standing upright and walking upright and lying down upright.

Then the whole phenomenal world becomes the expression of the Buddha Mind Seal and the entire sky becomes enlightenment. Another way to state this faith is when we celebrate in all our actions of body, speech and mind this intimate entrustment of by standing upright in this samadhi

then the entire phenomenal world celebrates this teaching of suchness. Another expression of faith. When we worship, when we worship, this Buddha mind seems in all our actions. By walking upright in this samadhi, the entire phenomenal world celebrates the Buddha mind. this expression of faith also applies to making offerings to all of our actions, by making all of our actions service of this Buddha mind, by making all of our actions homage to this Buddha mind.

Then the entire phenomenal world celebrates, serves, makes offerings, pays homage, and realizes intimate, inconceivable mutual assistance on the Buddha way, which is always the case And yet, we need to offer our actions to it. And we need to take care of our actions so that the offering can be clear and simple and unencumbered by inattention. Today we celebrate the last day.

Today we remember the last day. Pay homage to the last day of the life of our Founder. December 3rd, 1971, 44 years ago today, was his last day of life with us. When Dogen was close to death, he was talking to his close student, Tetsugikai Daisho, and he said, more details which I'd like to go into with you, but maybe that's enough for today.
