Today we are given a great day to practice the pivotal activity of all Buddhas. As we sang this morning, now all Buddha ancestors who uphold the Buddha Dharma have made it the true path of enlightenment to sit upright
[01:13]
in silence and stillness, practicing in the midst of self-fulfilling samadhi. What is this self-fulfilling samadhi?
[02:30]
It's where the Buddhas live and practice. It's where the ancestors live and practice. It's where we live and practice. It's an angelic realm, a realm where the angels live. However, talking about it is ordinary consciousness. And talking about this realm of the Buddha's pivotal activity is a place where fools rush in and angels fear to tread.
[03:52]
Fortunately, our practice includes being a fool. So I will enter the realm of talking about the self-fulfillment samadhi. This realm of Buddha's pivotal activity is where words pivot with not-words and not-words pivot with words. It is beyond words and not-words. Therefore, we use words to help beings enter it and practice in it.
[04:59]
It is the realm where words pivot with not-words. All this pivotal activity is the liberation of beings and the realization of peace Beyond words. We're living in it right now. We're living in this realm, which is not a world. It's beyond all worlds. But if we lean towards words or away from them, we may miss the place we are right now.
[06:19]
We do not have to be the slightest bit different from the way we are right now in order to practice like a Buddha. We just need to be wholeheartedly the way we are right now. That's how the Buddha is practicing us. And if there's the slightest deviation from this thorough exertion of the way we are right now, we may miss it. Even though it's impossible to miss it. And it's also impossible to not miss it. So the song goes on and says, when you, or we could say when we, express the Buddha seal, which is short for when we express the Buddha mind seal, in our three actions,
[08:15]
sitting upright in this samadhi, the whole phenomenal world becomes the Buddha Mind Seal and the entire sky turns into enlightenment. Right now we're all sitting upright in the Self-fulfillment Samadhi, we all have actions of body, speech and mind right now. When all these actions, when each of these actions is to express the Buddha
[09:29]
mudra, the Buddha seal. This is the activity of Buddhas. When every action upholds the Buddha mind seal, when every action displays the Buddha Mind Seal, when every action unfolds the Buddha Mind Seal, the entire phenomenal world becomes the Buddha Mind Seal. Our speech, our thinking, our posture is pivoting always in each moment with not our speech, not our posture, not our thinking.
[10:46]
And this is the activity of Buddhas, which liberates all beings, This is the Buddha mind seal. When our thinking is totally exerted, it becomes not our thinking. Of course, our thinking is totally exerted, but if we don't join that, we miss that our thinking is not thinking. We miss its reality. We miss the pivotal activity of all Buddhas, even though we cannot miss it. We can only resist it.
[11:50]
and be half-hearted about everything or each thing we do. The weight of our past karma seems to make it difficult for us to be wholehearted about our current karma. But it is our current karma that we use to express the Buddha Mind Seal. It is all we can use to express it, and the Buddhas use it to express the Buddha Mind Seal. Everyone is helping us to be wholeheartedly what we are, And therefore everyone is helping us to be what we not are.
[12:56]
What we are not. Here's the pivot all day long. This all is going on in stillness and silence. all day long. Right now I feel more or less full of joy to be a fool who tells you this, who tells me this, Over and over I say that I pray that this great assembly will remember stillness.
[14:31]
Remembering stillness means remembering to not move away or towards what you are right now. but to be totally what you are right now. And in this way, remembering stillness, you remember the pivotal activity and you practice it. You receive this self And if you receive this self wholeheartedly, you realize not this self. And in this way you receive and transmit the self-fulfilling samadhi. Right now in the realm of human consciousness, there is thinking.
[17:43]
In ancient times, a monk asked Yaoshan, in stillness and silence, what kind of thinking Yashan said, thinking, not thinking. The monk said, how? How can thinking be not thinking? Or how is thinking not thinking? Today I say, wholeheartedly thinking in stillness. That's how thinking is not thinking. And today in human consciousness, as it has been the case for thousands of years, feeling is going on.
[19:01]
And so we ask, in stillness today in this world, what kind of feeling? And the answer comes, feeling, not feeling. How do you feel, not feeling? Total exertion of feeling. In human consciousness, There may be pain. What kind of pain is there in stillness? Pain, not pain. Pain, not pain. This is the pivotal activity of all Buddhas. In order to enter it, we must totally exert the pain. In human consciousness there is self.
[20:10]
What kind of self is there in stillness? self, not-self, self, not-self. That's the kind of self. It is a self which is pivoting with not-self. It is a not-self pivoting with self. It is the pivotal activity of all Buddhas living in stillness now, all Buddhas uphold this Buddha mind seal. Mind is pivoting with not-mind. Not-mind is pivoting with mind. Our job is to be wholehearted. It's a difficult job.
[21:17]
in order to wholeheartedly think, we must be very generous, very careful and gentle and tender with the thinking, be patient with it, be diligent with it, be heroically energetic with it, be open, relaxed, calm, and undistracted with it. Not to tamper with it at all is the same as to totally exert it. And then we realize that the thinking of human consciousness is not thinking. And we realize the pivotal activity of all Buddhas, which, once again, the fool says, is alive right now in stillness, is alive right now in totally being
[22:35]
this thinking, this speaking, this posture. I pray that we use our thinking, our speaking, and our posture to express this Buddha Mind Seal, so that the whole phenomenal world, which means including all the suffering and distress and fear and greed, hate and delusion and cruelty, all the phenomenal world will become the Buddha Mind Seal. The whole phenomenal world will become totally exerted
[23:39]
and being totally exerted, it will become the Buddha mind seal. It will become not the whole phenomenal world. I don't know where this teaching came from, but It is difficult to believe. It is difficult to practice. It is difficult to understand. But this teaching has come into this room. It is the pivotal activity of all Buddhas in this room. It is the wind of the Buddha's house.
[25:20]
Today we have the opportunity to see and listen to this wind, to remember and accept it. and taste the truth of the Tathagata's words for the welfare of this world in crisis.
