AI Suggested Keywords:
Probably 2003 at Tassajara - SDH
The talk explores the concept of the inconceivable wondrous Dharma transmitted by all Buddha Tathagatas, emphasizing the practice of Zen through the unconstructed method of "sitting upright" where body and mind drop off, actualizing self-fulfilling samadhi. It highlights the theme of grasping and seeking as sources of suffering, with an invitation to transcend these through the practice of non-grasping, allowing for the realization of interconnectedness and Nirvana.
- Self-Fulfilling Samadhi: This is described as the benchmark for engaging with the unconstructed, unrestricted realm of Zen practice, achieved through upright sitting where the body and mind drop off.
- The Inconceivable Wondrous Dharma: Central to the talk, this concept underscores the unconstructed method by which Buddhas live and transmit Dharma, illuminating consciousness beyond the realm of conventional comprehension.
- Grasping and Seeking: The talk discusses these as constructs that create suffering due to perceived separations between subject and object, urging practitioners to let go and experience interconnectedness.
- Nirvana: Practicing breathing without grasping and seeking is framed as an approach to realizing Nirvana, dissolving the constructions of separation.

I've heard that all Buddha Tathagatas who directly transmit inconceivable wondrous dharma and actualize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment have a wondrous unconstructed method. I've heard that Buddhas who transmit an inconceivable dharma live in this realm of

inconceivable dharma, and that no trace of consciousness reaches their life in this inconceivable dharma. Yet, the dharma illuminates their consciousness, and that illuminated consciousness transmits the dharma by an unconstructed method.
[02:05]
And the standard or the touchstone for this is called the self-fulfilling samadhi, and sitting upright, with body and mind dropping off, is the authentic gate to this unrestricted, unconstructed realm of the samadhi of the Buddhas living in the inconceivable wondrous

dharma. All beings live in this same inconceivable dharma, but it is not actualized without the practice, without the being upright, as the body and mind drop off. We have the opportunity today to practice this unconstructed method of being upright.
[04:23]
Practicing Zen, which means being upright, body and mind dropping off. Bodies and minds seek when they grasp, and bodies and minds often grasp when they grasp. Bodies and minds are subjects and objects that grasp objects as separate from subjects. When there's grasping, then there's seeking. The unconstructed way is no grasping and no seeking.
[05:43]
Constructions arise, constructions of things that don't exist arise moment by moment. There is the constant production of what does not exist. The method to enter and actualize the realm of dharma is giving up grasping those constructions, and furthermore, we cannot make ourselves stop the construction or stop grasping the constructions. Still, the encouragement of living without grasping and seeking is appearing to your ears and eyes.
[07:07]
If now we are grasping a sense of things being external, out there, distant from our mind which knows them, this is grasping the self which does not exist in those things, and the self which does not exist in our knowing. Grasping the self, we are separate from each other, and we are separate from our own life, and our own actions, and our own decisions. And being separate from our own actions and decisions is suffering, being separate from each other, or rather, grasping the construction that we are separate is a source of suffering.
[08:24]
So we have a chance now to sit upright and consider the possibility of realizing no grasping and no seeking, moment after moment, moment by moment. An unconstructed method of not grasping these mere constructions of separation between subject and object, knowing and what is known, unenlightened beings and enlightened beings, and so on. Thank you. Thank you.

Thank you. Breathing in and breathing out with no seeking or grasping. This is Nirvana. This is Nirvana. This is Nirvana.

All things that appear outside, external to your awareness, give that externality a rest. And breathe through the story of separation. Let the breath blow away any grasping. And let the body and mind drop away into the realm of the inconceivable Dharma, and enjoy sitting with all the Buddhas.
[13:14]
Right now, all the Buddhas are sitting at ease. In the midst of the wondrous Dharma, giving us the Dharma which we are receiving and giving back to them. Drop all body and mind, and enjoy this imperceptible, mutual, giving.
